I first came to Houston in 1963 from Nuevo Laredo, Mexico to study art. I first attended school at The Museum of Fine Arts and then went to The University of Houston where I received a Bachelor’s of Science in Art Education K – 12. I started teaching art in Houston ISD ( 9years) and at the same time earned a Master’s Degree in Educational Psychology from Texas A & M University in College Station. I became a school counselor and when I retired in 2003 after 33 years of working for HISD I started doing my own art. When I start a painting or a monotype, I do not know what is going to happen. I have no idea where I am going with it. I have no plans. I only know what color I want to use, and later on I decide where the visual texture is going to be placed and make sure there is some movement and lines on the piece. As I create the art piece I have to make decisions just as if I was solving a problem and instead of using numbers I am using color, texture, and movement.
